March 20th – International Happiness Day

March 21st, 2013 by Tatiana

This year on March, 20 the world’s first International Day of Happiness was celebrated. The day which was introduced by the UN recognises happiness as a fundamental human goal.

The initiative to declare a day of happiness came from Bhutan – a country whose citizens are considered to be some of the happiest people in the world. In 1972, King Wangchuck of Bhutan introduced the phrase “Gross Natural Happiness”, the spiritual well-being of the nation, which according to him, was more important than the Gross National Product. Today Bhutan is a happy place which managed to ensure that capitalism didn’t erode its traditions. Take example from this country and place less emphasis on physical acquisition and more on preserving your mental health.

Happiness International is encouraging people to make a Happiness Day Resolution by choosing one action supporting their happiness to continue developing over the coming year. Earlier this year I already wrote a post on 15 Resolutions of Happiness:

“Happiness. What does this word mean? It has roughly seven billion meanings as it means different things for each person on our planet. What does happiness mean to you? Personal achievements, replica designer handbags, career, relationships, adventure, material possessions, family,  comfort..?  Not long ago I got a book called “Happy. Secret of happiness from the cultures around the world” by Lonely Planet, which speaks about happiness and the ways to achieve it, giving examples of how different cultures invite happiness into their lives…..”

March 20 was chosen as the day of International Happiness because vernal equinox when day and night are the same length falls on this day. It is also known as the first day of spring. Indeed, spring is in the air! It is a time for fresh beginnings and an opportunity for self renewal. And there are many replica designer handbags for women. It makes me happy.

I came across this wonderful infographic ABC’s of Happiness which shows the whole alphabet of ways to remain happy in your own life.
